Dr Fiona Burke

Hailing from across the pond (the small pond – Irish Sea) Dr Burke is a microbiologist with a passion for pathogenesis. She completed her degree at Trinity College, Dublin, and then moved onto a PhD in the field of preventative medicine, studying the superbug Staphylococcus aureus and later continued on as a postdoctoral research assistant again looking at MRSA. Since becoming a teacher in 2010 at St Paul’s School in the Biology Department, she has played an important role in Pask Soc, the school’s biochemistry projects group, and is relishing the opportunity for the further challenges and excitement that iGEM offers. Furthermore, she is quite partial to eating chocolate, oftentimes in conjunction with cheese.

Dr Camille Shammas

A passionate biochemist, Dr Shammas, completed a dual honour degree in Biochemistry and Microbiology before moving on to complete a PhD in protein structure determination by x-ray crystallography. He has since been a postdoctoral research scientist as part of teams both in the UK and the US before he joined St Paul’s School in 2008 as a member of the Biology Department. Outside of the classroom Dr Shammas is master-in-charge of the illustrious (currently undefeated in two years) SPS Fencing Team and he has set up a bio-chemistry society, Pask Soc in memory of St Paul’s teacher Sidney Pask; the group meets weekly and has this year organised trips to the Sanger Institute and started a plasmid mutagenesis project to modify T4 bacteriophage lysozyme. In this first year that St Paul’s is competing in iGEM, Dr Shammas’ good sense of humour and optimism are proving to just as useful tools as his extensive knowledge. He likes both cheese and chocolate.
