Our team recently took a poll of students at our school as well as other members of our community on whether genetically modified foods should be sold in grocery stores and used in school lunches.  After surveying around 200 people, we found that around 42% of people were completely opposed to the use of genetically modified foods, 26% approved of their use, and 32% had no opinion.  These statistics, especially the large percentage of interviewees who had no opinion,  show that a large amount of people in our local community are not informed about the use of GMO’s, and that further effort should be put into educating parents and students about the benefits of GMO’s.

Human Practices


Our team recently took a poll of students at our school as well as other members of our community on whether genetically modified foods should be sold in grocery stores and used in school lunches. After surveying around 200 people, we found that around 42% of people were completely opposed to the use of genetically modified foods, 26% approved of their use, and 32% had no opinion. These statistics, especially the large percentage of interviewees who had no opinion, show that a large amount of people in our local community are not informed about the use of GMO’s, and that further effort should be put into educating parents and students about the benefits of GMO’s.


While our team was collecting data, we gathered some responses from parents and students that really stood out. One student from our local elementary school said that genetically modified food was similar to “zombie food” and said that “I don’t want to fill up my stomach with unnatural foods made of strange chemicals.” A parent we found outside of the elementary school agreed with the child, saying that “I would not allow my child to eat food that has had its DNA messed with by scientists. Who knows whether the DNA of my son’s corn was modified to give him the stomach flu?”


However, we also received positive feedback as well. A TJ student told us that “Genetically modified food could bring so many benefits to poor communities all around the globe. Vitamin deficiency can become a thing of the past!”


In addition, we also asked these same 200 people about the idea of having a GMO band aid, which would work the same way as neosporin would on a regular band aid, but would be a great deal cheaper. Surprisingly, around 63% of people approved of their use, our most common response being similar to “our bodies have a plethora of bacteria already, I think that having a GMO band aid would more similarly replicate our natural body processes.” In the context of our project, this is a great result, showing that our project would be instantly applicable and successful.


In conclusion, a lot of work still has to be done to fully educate our local community about the great potential benefits that GMO’s can bring to the dinner table, but using GMO for healing would prove to be a very successful venture.

Our team has also took matters into our own hands and helped to educate our community through many different mediums. From the very beginning, we realized that we could make a very big difference in the education of our school using the power of Facebook. We have created a facebook page whose sole purpose is to inform our student body about the benefits of studying genetic engineering and to showcase important research in the field. Facebook is a very common social networking site for students at TJ, and our page frequently sends out information that our student body can easily access. We have around 70 people who have liked our page, and the number is constantly growing. Through this page, we hope that more and more of our students can consider a career in genetic engineering and support the use of GMO’s in our everyday lives.


In addition to our facebook page, we participated in our school’s annual Techstravaganza, a science exploration day where various science clubs create booths with fun and educational activities for elementary and middle school students. Our team ran a booth this year, in which we had two main activities planned. In one activity we had the students create DNA out of common food items, which aimed to help the students gain a basic understanding of the double-helix structure of DNA. In our second activity, we had students engage in a mock plasmid transformation using felt pieces and velcro, which helped the students to understand the basic idea behind transformation. Through our experience at Techstravaganza, our team helped to spark the minds of our nation’s future in the field of genetic engineering.
