Requirements for Participation in iGEM 2013 High School

Below is a list of requirements for participating in the iGEM 2013 High School Division. For information on the requirements for registration, please see the Registration Handbook.

Note that this list is currently in DRAFT form and is subject to change.

  1. Team Composition:
    • An iGEM high school team must consist primarily of high school students. The team must be supervised by at least one instructor. This instructor can be either a high school teacher or a college/university professor. A team can have one or more team advisors who are college students, high school teachers, professors, or industry professionals.
    • Students are considered high school students if they have not yet received their high school diploma by the iGEM registration deadline.
  2. Team Structure:
    • The structure of iGEM teams is flexible. Several schools may combine to form a team and a school may have several teams.
  3. Consent Forms:
    • Teams must submit all required consent forms before they will be approved as an iGEM HS team.
      1. Each participant must submit a signed participant consent form. High school students must have a parent sign their consent forms.
      2. The principal of each participating high school must sign the principal consent form.
      3. If the team will be performing their laboratory work at a university, the department head in charge of the laboratory must sign the department head consent form. The principal must also sign the principal consent form.
    • For more information and to download the consent forms, see the Consent Forms page.
  4. Registration:
All teams interested in participating in iGEM 2013 HS are required to complete the registration process.
    • Each team must submit the registration application. Additional requirements for a team's registration can be seen at the Registration Handbook.
    • A team registration fee of $1500 is required for each team. For more information about the team registration fee, see the team registration fee page.
  5. High School Jamboree:
All team members are encouraged to attend the iGEM 2013 High School Jamboree.
    • An attendance fee of $90 USD is required for each individual attending the High School Jamboree.
    • For more information about the Jamboree attendance fee, see the attendance fee page.
  6. Project Documentation:
    • The team's project must be documented on the iGEM Wiki, the parts used in their project must be documented in the Registry online. You have the freedom to be creative, but a few specific rules apply. See the wiki requirements.
  7. Attribution:
    • The description of each project must clearly attribute work done by the students and distinguish it from work done by others, including the host labs, advisors, instructors, technicians, sponsors, professional website designers, artists, and commercial services.
  8. Safety:
    • Teams are required to answer the Safety questions on their team Safety Wiki page. See the Safety page for the list of questions.
  9. Project Presentation:
    • All teams are required to present at the High School Jamboree in June. Each team will give a 20 minute presentation and present a poster of their project. Oral and poster presentations must be given by the students.
  10. Positive Contribution:
    • All participants are required to work hard to build positive contributions to society and have lots of fun!
