Who we are?

Our team was made up of 19 members. All the students came from grade10 or grade11. Besides, there were also two biology teachers , one chemistry teacher joined our team. All we had in common was the deep love and interest in biology. Of course, everyone in our group must be fond of hands-on experiment and biological knowledge. We have made our team’s decision on the project. Although sometimes the procedure is very troublesome and we have to do some frustrating works, nobody complains or gives up. We really enjoy the process of finishing the project, not the consequence. Everyone aspire to the happiness of the groupwork , the communication, the cooperation. And we prefer to design a synthetic bacteria which is useful to human’s daily life. Our weekly activity is on Tuesday and Wednesday. The funniest 2 days at school. Hello!

I have majored in molecular biology for doctor degree in Institute of Botany, the Chinese Academy of Sciences, and published the paper about UV radiation-responsive proteins in rice Leaves by a proteomic analysis in academic journal: Plant Cell and Physiology. IGEM competition is interesting for me and my students. The process for preparing the competition is hardly, but funny, happy for us, which improves the ability of students, and promotes friendship between them. I like IGEM!
Team idea
During the early days, almost everyone in our team came up with many ideas about synthetic biology. Some of them are devoted to improve or protecte the environment. Others tend to detect and induce. At last , after our discussion, everybody thought that Lydia’s project about the UV was more available and easy to implement. So everyone is dedicated to studying the UV intensity and doing research.

My name is Yu Hanwu. My English name is Abby.

I am outgoing and I am ready to make friends with everyone I meet. I like travelling, watching movies as well as reading books. As the captain of the team, I hope we can work together and improve ourselves’ ability. And I hope everyone can learn something for this meaningful and special experience.
My idea:ocean acidate.
First, I suggested preventing ocean acidate by looking for an E. coli which would attract carbon dioxide and change color. Because the ocean is becoming more acidic due to the dissolved carbon dioxide. If carbon dioxide continues to be emitted at the current rate, then the 22 century, the PH value of the oceans will decline 0.5. Such a drastic change will bring greatly affect to marine, which includes the deaths of a large number of creatures, especially the coral reef. So I said that we can sprinkled the ideal E.coli into sea, these bacteria can quickly absorb carbon dioxide and floating to the surface of the sea. Noticed the apparent color, scientists can pay more attention to the affected area and make appropriate measures.

My ideas: a bacteria to detect UV level & a bacteria for people helping them to express their emotion
Idea 1: The bacteria can pass the test to different levels of color. Just set the UV index 5 as the boundary, less than equal to 5 bacteria can be red, more than 5 be green. People can hang the bacteria product out door or hang it on the bag. The bacteria are not in direct contact with the human body, so there is no damage to people.
Idea 2: This product has the following two parts, the first part is a group of bacteria can be implanted in the body, after implantation into the human body, this group of bacteria can feel all the information in your body, then they will send this information to the second part of the main information -- bacteria, the main information of bacteria as those bacteria population, through different information transfer from bacteria may reflect different colors, so people can directly observed through the glass bottle color to see a friend mood.

As a senior high student, I was born in September 1995. My Idea: Improving Marine Environment.
Serious oil pollution of the ocean, destroys the ecological balance of the oceans . This layer of oil film separates the atmosphere and seawater, it will interfere the dissolved oxygen in seawater, decrease the amount of oxygen. At the same time, the oil film avoids marine plants photosynthesis , and marine animals will die due to the O2 lack. If we could find a substance bacteria that can not only tolerate salinity and can buoy on the water, but also can provide marine creatures a new photosynthesis occasion, like fluoresce, or something else. And that the creatures will not suffer such a severe situation.

Hey, everybody, my name is Andy.

I am from class 1 grade 10. I join the iGEM team of HW. Why did I make this choice. One of the reason is that I can learn something not only about Synthetic Biology but also useful for my future life. People here are friendly and kindly. And I am glad to be here for this introduction about myself. For real, I am not good at biology before. But I promise I will study hard in the team. Math and English are my favorite subjects. And Harvard is the college of my dream of. As for my spare time, I’d like to play basketball and play games. And I wish we can keep a great relationship with others in the team. In a relationship, there are certain considerations or factors that people will into account in a very serious way. My idea: Develop a acidity level tool for plants
It utilizes a pH sensing and modifying bacteria to monitor the environment of planting soil for acid plants. The goal is to chain a pH sensor to turn on a hydrogen pump, effectively acidifying any area deemed too basic. This bacteria could replace the common use of directly applie acids. The benefits would include a self sustained system that constantly monitors and adjusts pH for an ideal environment.

My idea:prevent red tide.
I very interested in red tide . Because of the accumulation of lots of phytoplankton, protozoa and bacteria, the water comes to change its color. And the red tide will cause many creatures died of oxygen deficit or poisoning. Therefore, I thought that maybe we can find a bacteria which can infect the phytoplankton by carrying a kind of virus. So that the red tide will be wipe away.

My idea: Invent a kind of bacteria in order to detect the release of formaldehyde
formaldehyde is oxidation in the body, produce the alcohol, when alcohol concentration reaches a certain value, the red light will be made by the fluorescent protein, tip here is harmful to human body. Can be used in home decoration paint on. It is very essential for the house which is just decorated.

My idea:make a bacteria to find the changes of our temperature
I’d like to create a bacteria that can respond the changing of our temperature by discoloring. I wants to design a bacteria, it shows red when the temperature is high(it’s hot outside), while it becomes blue if the temperature is quite low(it’s cold outside). I also advices that we can use it to draw a smiling face. The dual--colored face will tell people the weather outside, and that kind of clothes to wear. All in all, my idea was made for people’s daily life.
