Our project is about a genetic engineered machine in E. coli with the ability to produce Vip3ca3 which acts as a pesticide protein. Vip3ca3 production will be regulated by specific temperatures in order to avoid overproduction and it will show activity against target organisms Coleoptera and Lepidoptera, which are related to a local problem concerning potato crops. The Vip3ca3 production is regulated with a constitutive promoter and a riboswitch that initiate translation around 32°C. Since we want to produce the Vip3ca3 below the 32°C, we use a set of promoter-repressors in order to invert the activation of the protein production. This model may be used as a regulator in future transgenic plant generations for the production of substances against plagues, avoiding pesticide overproduction, thus reducing the effect in Non-Target Organisms and bioaccumulation and can be used with different temperature ranges and/or different proteins to attack other target organisms.

Mayor Interview

Political Impact
As an important part of the diffusion in this project, we visited the Jesús Hernández Martínez Mayor of Garcia, one of the cities in our state that nowadays is constantly affected by an infestation in the agricultural section principally the walnut’s crops, which in past years had given a lot of damage to the walnut trees. Also we had the opportunity to meet the federative representative in purpose to talk also about this topic.

At our visit with Garcia city’s mayor it was principally exposed what synthetic biology was and how this could help to solve the problem that this city has with the plagues like how we mentioned before. The major got really interested and excited with the idea of the biodegradable insecticidal. Also we talked about iGEM competition and we also told him about our project and he was really pleased with this. The major recognize his ignorance about this subject and got really interested knowing that teenagers like us were concerned to search for solutions to the problems of our entity. What he liked the most was that we took care in spread this knowledge to teenagers so that they could also get interested in this subject that not everyone has the opportunity to know.
