Safety Exposures
In order to promote safety inside the laboratory and make iGEM known in our school we gave an exposition about the safety rules in laboratory in every second semester classroom. First, we started with a little introduction about what iGEM and what synthetic biology is. Then, we explained what our project is about and how it is divided in branches like human practices, lab work, math model, software and safety. After this, we explained in general terms what safety area is in environmental security, ethics and the importance of following security rules inside the laboratory. Finally, and after showing the consequences that a laboratory accident could imply, we exposed the basic rules that need to be followed in any laboratory in order to prevent accidents and seize the practice time. We finished with a fast activity in which two students came up to the front of the class and they competed to see who could put on the safety laboratory equipment in the fastest time possible.
We chose to give the exposition to second semester students to publicize our project among the possible next generation of iGEM CIDEB. The total time that the expositions took was 15 minutes and we visited 17 classrooms in total. Thanks to this activity the students develop a conscience about the risk of working in the laboratory and the importance of following the laboratory safety rules. Also, after the expositions some student got interested in the project so it was publicity for the team and the project as well. This is the presentation that was used:
