The history of the team is a quaint one. We began our planning in February 2012, when we got the Principal’s consent and the Torrey Pines High School science department’s permission and support towards the end of last academic year. We have been using the book “DNA Science: A First Course”, 2nd ed., by David Micklos and Greg Freyer. In addition to being a great introductory book on the subject, the book also contains hands on labs that the team has been taken through. We began training in August 2012, and thus far we have honed our skills in a variety of lab protocols such as bacterial transformation with competent cells, the polymerase chain reaction (PCR), gel electrophoresis, DNA splicing, extraction, and ligation, as well as work with hybrid promoters. During the summer, we started building our lab capabilities by getting equipment from a variety of biology surpluses and working on logistics for how to ship items to school
