Lab Safety
Every iGEM member is well aware before working in the lab to:
- Part take in a district wide safety training program video that teaches lab safety
- Make sure that there is going to be a teacher/advisor present when working in a lab
- That their wardrobe is lab appropriate:
- Long hair must be tied back to prevent it from catching on fire
- Closed toed shoes much be worn to prevent any chemicals from reaching their skin
- No bracelets or jewelry are allowed, during any lab procedures
- Food shouldn't be consumed whatsoever
When working in the lab all members should follow and are informed that:
- Safety goggles, gloves, and lab smocks are a necessity for safety; NEVER handle hot objects without proper equipment.
- Clean your lab station (whip down lab station, move any object that are a road block, etc.)
- Always follow lab procedures (read labels carefully) if you are unable to understand them ask for assistance
- Horseplay is just not allowed in the lab, step outside to horse around
- All chemicals should be considered dangerous; do NOT taste or smell any chemicals. If you take a whiff of any chemical and you feel light headed (or any another other strange feeling) step back from the area and go towards a well-ventilated area for a few seconds, if you’re still having trouble talk to a teacher/advisor
- If one is exposed to any chemicals one should IMMEDIATELY rinse with water, ask and inform teacher/advisor for further assistance. If exposure is extreme there are nearby emergency shower/eye wash accessible
Once the lab is no longer in use (or needed) each and every iGEM members are expected to:
- Properly clean the lab station with goggles, gloves, and lab smokes still on
- Properly clean materials and place back into their original, safe spot
